the beauty of things

The Beauty of Things
by Robinson Jeffers

To feel and speak the astonishing beauty of things—earth, stone and water,
Beast, man and woman, sun, moon and stars—
The blood-shot beauty of human nature, its thoughts, frenzies and passions,
And unhuman nature its towering reality—
For man’s half dream; man, you might say, is nature dreaming, but rock
And water and sky are constant—to feel
Greatly, and understand greatly, and express greatly, the natural
Beauty, is the sole business of poetry.
The rest’s diversion: those holy or noble sentiments, the intricate ideas,
The love, lust, longing: reasons, but not the reason.

  2. There's so much here, especially in those last lines about "those holy or noble sentiments, the intricate ideas, the love, lust, longing: reasons, but not the reason." One needs a good wine and a long night to get deeper into this one.

  3. A good wine and a long night, George says.... :) I'd love to have that with you again, dear Ruth! And these tulips...I don't suppose they are yet yours from the farm?

    1. I would love it too, Boots. These tulips are at the farm, from a couple of years ago. We had snow yesterday! (today's photo 4/15) But the tulips are popping up, and this week is supposed to be in the 50s and 60s at long last.

Welcome. If you would like to say something, rest assured that I will respond in my self, even if I do not respond in word.
