food and security and love

“It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it… and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied… and it is all one.”

— M.F.K. Fisher, The Art of Eating

  2. with this i can not but help see the void set against being and the movement between the two states, where we are and what we lean toward, this our hunger, our desire, our longing.

this photograph is pure magic to me. or not magic, but revelation.

something else comes to me now though too, considering our hunger. i just listened to a show on Thucydides, the historian, the realist. 2500 years ago he noted that "the culprit of evil is the weakness of human nature." (as paraphrased from a cbc radio program on Ideas about Thucydides, the first journalist.) he explains that when our security is threatened human nature has the inability to withstand great stress. pushed against a wall "most men's tempers fall to the level of their circumstances and the dregs of human nature come to the floor." i consider the hunger of the spirit but also the hunger of the ego. when i consider it all i am less optimistic about mankind and can not help but adopt some of Thucydides' resignation. our hunger is that which creates all opportunity but it is all opportunity and inside such large parameters there is no real and enduring thing such as security. as such we must beware of what we are capable of.

(i've been thinking about this photograph and piece for some days. i've been too busy again this last while, ruth, and hope that in my tired and muddled mind i've managed to make some sense. i think there is something here that is key and deserves attention.

plus, i can't help but have a love-on for this photo and its truth:)
