the fly

The Fly
by Lydia Davis
At the back of the bus,
inside the bathroom,
this very small illegal passenger,
on its way to Boston.

Lydia Davis is the 2013 winner of the Man Booker International Prize for fiction. "The Fly" is one of her short stories. I'm pretty geeked that I can post entire short stories at small!

  1. Oh, that fly!

I've been meaning to ask for ages what focal-length lens you use for all those atmospheric close-up and background-out of-focus shots you are so adept at. I just can't achieve those effects with my Sony Nexus and the standard telephoto that came with the pack.

    1. Thanks for the kind words, Robert. Believe it or not, for these shots I use my best lens, which is the Nikon 60mm f/2.8G AF-S Micro Nikkor AF ED Lens. Yes, my macro!

    2. However, now that I think about this shot, it was a couple of years go, and I think I used my regular 35 mm lens and just had the f-stop at 2.8.

  2. Another amazing photo indeed! Such detail in the shadow! I see you have a "big girl" camera :) I have a Kodak EZ share, and somehow manage to get decent photos out of it, but I want a "big girl" camera too. Have been thinking of the Canon Rebel, but someone recently told me I'd be better off getting a Nikon. So now I'm confused (which doesn't take much these days :) l0l... I always enjoy your exquisite photography - filled with feeling and poetic depth...

    1. Hi, Christine! Thanks so much for your positive feedback on the photos. So nice of you.

I always wanted a Canon Rebel myself. A photographer friend insisted on a Nikon for me, and I am glad I have it. One of the reasons is that one summer I had a bad fall in NYC with the Nikon around my neck, and I actually landed ON the camera. Didn't feel good on the chest/ribs, I'll tell you. I cared more about the camera than my aching body and immediately took a pic of my daughter's horrified face to see if it worked! :) It did. My photographer friend siad that if it had been a Canon it would have broke. :)

  3. I can't speak to what your friend said, Ruth, but you know Astrid and I are Nikon and Canon "big girls" respectively. Mine is the EOS 400D or Rebel Xti and has served me well for 5 years. But bottom line, the lenses AND the photographer are probably more important??!! I love the rivalry, of course. :)

In the meantime, I LOVE your image...and being geeked with you about such a short story. Indeed!
